Kenney First Game Kit: one art family, one palette, one game.
A curated starter set from Kenney's public-domain library — sprites, interface art, and 293 sound effects, enough for a first 2D game — plus the one discipline that decides whether the finished game looks made or assembled: consistency.

The problem this solves (in beginners' own ranking)
In this project's survey of beginner game-makers, the loudest complaint about AI-generated game art wasn't quality — it was that dozens of generated images “end up looking like they come from different games.” The folk fix the community converged on: one shared palette (their figure: about forty colours), one asset family, every choice recorded. This kit is that fix, packaged: a closed, measured palette instead of an open firehose.

Measured, not asserted
| The palette | 45 distinct opaque colours across all 271,124 pixels of the pack's world art (counted pixel by pixel, 2026-10-23). The folk figure said ~40; the real family measures 45. |
| The world art | 240 PNGs — tilesheets, individual tiles, backgrounds, characters. World tiles 18×18, characters 24×24, on one grid. |
| The whole download | Three zips, 3,777,882 bytes total — a curated subset, deliberately not the library's 60,000+ assets. |
| The license | CC0 (public domain), verified at the source and in Kenney's own License.txt inside every zip. Commercial use fine; attribution not required. |
The consistency discipline (the heart of the kit)
The pack's consistency.md is written to be pasted into your AI session, not just read by you. Its rules, in short:
- One family for the world — every sprite from Pixel Platformer, or drawn to match it. Never a second style, not even for one special level.
- One family for the interface — the UI Pack is chrome only; interface art never leaks into the world.
- The palette is closed — new or AI-generated art gets recoloured to the measured 45 colours before it enters the game. A needed colour outside the palette gets proposed, never silently added.
- One grid — 18×18 tiles, integer scaling only.
- Sound follows the same rule — one jump sound, one coin sound, chosen once from the kit.
- Record every choice in the kit's ledger — the next session (possibly a different AI with no memory) matches the ledger, or the choice doesn't exist.
The nits, stated plainly
- It's a subset on purpose. If your game needs a spaceship, this kit's platformer family won't have one — the full library (60,000+ assets, still free and CC0) is at kenney.nl. The kit trades breadth for a guaranteed-matching start.
- The UI Pack's vector files were dropped in curation (434 SVGs duplicating the shipped PNGs as source files). Noted in the manifest, not hidden; the full pack including vectors is one free download away.
- The palette measurement excludes Preview/Sample images — care taken so marketing pictures didn't inflate the game-art count. The 45 is the art itself.
- Consistency is a refusal, and refusals are annoying. Mid-project, the discipline will say no to a gorgeous off-family sprite. That's the feature working, and it's still annoying.

Adding to the Forge
A Forge entry needs a name, a one-line claim, an author line, a worked example with real measurements, the files, and its limitations on its page — this one included.
